Attorney Jennifer Stergion today announced her candidacy for the Erie County Legislature's 3rd District seat for the November 2013 general election.
"As a fiscal conservative, I recognize that the era of Control Board politics must come to an end. We know it's time for a change and to focus the Legislature on county issues, not state politics. Together we can make this happen. I am looking forward to this election season and to serve as the next Erie County Legislator for the 3rd District," said Stergion.
A registered Conservative, Stergion advocates fiscal responsibility. Being a solo legal practitioner in the Black Rock area of Buffalo, she is familiar with the responsibilities associated with small business ownership. In addition to a Juris Doctor, Stergion has a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Psychology. This background makes her uniquely qualified to oversee the budget for the Sheriff and Department of Social Services, two examples of important responsibilities of members in the Legislature.
Stergion focuses her practice in family law, assisting children and families weave their way through the court system. As a strong voice for veterans' rights, she has spoken before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Veterans Affairs, where she addressed the importance of increased funding for Veterans' Courts nationwide and attorney education on veteran advocacy.
Being committed to the study of ethics, both inside and outside the legal profession, Stergion has lectured in United States and Europe on ethics, the law, and medicine. She was the 2007 recipient of the New York State Bar Association Ethics Award. Stergion's strong sense of responsibility to the community is most notable in her pro bono work. In 2008 and 2009, she received the pro bono award for Volunteer Lawyers Project, and in 2009 she received the Statewide Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award. A strong community advocate, she has since sat on a number of Boards and Committees to promote veterans' rights, small businesses, and community-based service provides.
As a hard worker and advocate for community service, Stergion is looking forward to this next opportunity to serve Erie County.
