Odisha Gears Up for Winter’s Bite: Temperatures Set to Dip 2-3°C Starting December 5

BHUBANESWAR – As the eastern Indian state of Odisha savors a brief respite from the winter’s grip, meteorologists are urging residents to prepare for a swift return of the chill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a noticeable plunge in night temperatures by 2-3°C across most parts of the state beginning December 5, signaling the onset of more intense cold conditions.
This upcoming drop follows a temporary easing of the winter weather, influenced by a low-pressure system dubbed “DITWAH” over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The system has brought a slight rise in minimum temperatures over the past few days, but dry conditions are expected to persist until at least December 7, with no rain in sight. “Dense fog was reported in Rourkela and light fog in Bhavanipatna,” noted meteorologist Rajshree VPM from IMD Bhubaneswar, highlighting the current hazy mornings that have already blanketed parts of the region.
In the immediate term, no major changes in minimum temperatures are anticipated for the next four days, up to December 4. However, residents in Sundargarh, Kandhamal, and Koraput districts should brace for dense fog on the morning of December 1, where visibility could plummet to 50 meters or less. Such conditions pose risks for commuters, farmers, and early risers navigating rural roads and highways.
Recent readings underscore the variability: Daringbadi, often called the “Kashmir of Odisha,” clocked the state’s lowest at 10°C, while Rourkela registered 10.6°C in the last 24 hours. As the chill deepens next week, these figures could trend even lower, potentially disrupting daily routines and agricultural activities in this agrarian heartland.
IMD’s advisory emphasizes vigilance, recommending warm clothing, caution during foggy drives, and monitoring updates for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. With Odisha’s diverse topography—from coastal plains to hilly interiors—the cold wave’s reach will test communities’ resilience, much like the vibrant festivals that define the state’s spirit.
As December unfolds, this forecast serves as a timely reminder of winter’s dual nature: a crisp invitation to cozy evenings by the hearth, even as it challenges the outdoors. Stay tuned to local weather channels, and here’s to navigating the season with warmth and wisdom.
